Marceline's relationships | Adventure Time Wiki | FANDOM powered by Wikia
By confirming a long-standing relationship between Princess Bubblegum and Marceline with an on-screen kiss. Warning! Major spoilers for the. Adventure Time is known for its' exploration of complex themes and yet still questions around some characters histories and relationships. Princess Bubblegum and Marceline's relationship, also referred to as Bubbline, has a lot of evidence suggesting that is so much more than a mere platonic.
That would make them perfect for each other. Even if they don't end up together, it would be better for the writers to come out and say it on the show. They've already been through what little backlash resulted from the Mathmatical video, which was pretty blatent.
Why not do away with the subtext then?
If Finn can have a canon crush on PB, then PB and Marceline should be able to have canon romantic feelings for each other. And, also, there is a storyboard of Marceline saying this: So, forget about Marcelgum! Implying bisexuals don't exist. Implying there aren't gay characters already in the show. I think the main reason for the way she acts becomes apparent from her past relationships.
Marceline has abandonment issues stemming from her traumatic childhood. She was separated from her parents at a young age and raised by a man who barely even knew who he was.
I can see such a past leading to her clingy attention seaking attitude towards others and also explains why even an ending between friends could be devestating towards her.
Marceline's main fear is being left alone again.

Her main coping mechanism is to cast blame onto others and pretend that they weren't really important to her. Some part of her may have even cast blame on her father for her being alone for so long, which explains her running away from home. In the end, her only stable relationship is with Finn and Jake, but I think it's only a matter of time before something happens to cause issues between them as well.
Whoswho 23 talk Rebecca Sugar claimed that they "had a falling out" and this usually only happens between close friends and relationship partners, so they clearly used to be one of those two. Even if that's the case, with Marceline, it wouldn't have to be a romantic relationship for Marceline to act out the way she did. We know from "Go With Me" that Bubblegum didn't like Marceline's dark personality, and from the same episode we see Marceline acting out in an attempt for attention.
We also hear in "I'm Just Your Problem" that Marceling felt she was being ignored, but given her past, we can see why she would demand attention from every relationship she has, romantic or otherwise. The ending between the two was probably Marceline's feelings of being ignored reaching a boiling point at which time she turned to her coping mechanism of cold detatchment and cut ties entirely. I think the main thing that sustains Marceline and Finn's relationship is the fact that Finn often doesn't care how dark Marceline and has taken a more supportive attitude towards her.
Princess Bubblegum could have been offended by this, causing her somewhat dismissive reaction to Marceline in "Go With Me. They must have had a different relationship than they did previously since they had a falling out which means they were either friends or were dating.
Considering Marceline's song, it seems slightly more likely that they were dating but no confirmation so it's still a definite possibility that they were just friends.
This is all we know. In a sarcastic manner? What are you basing that off of? The song is very ambiguous. It's just as likely that the relationship was completely platonic. To me, whichever is "more likely" is whichever one you want. The only way this can be solved is if we interrogate Rebecca or look for more evidence in " Sky Witch. Like RootSword wall I am honestly surprised when many people just go an call PB and Marceline used to had a lesbian relationship.
I only see them to used to have a close relationship, you know like BFF kind of stuffs? Because I have friends that are girls, and they used to be BFFs and things turn sour and their relationship is now kinda like what it is pictured in "What was Missing", and yeah I know pretty well they weren't and still aren't lesbian. They can be lesbians in the past, not that I am arguing against that conclusion, but with the evidence showed in the serial, it's just a very weak evidence towards that conclusion I think Prince Ozzie talk I really just don't have that much time.
However, here are my thoughts on the subject: Something happened that caused a falling out between the two. While Marceline doesn't feel that she did anything wrong although she can't even remember what exactly happenedshe wishes that thing could go back to the way they were before.
Based of Marceline's comment, "Looks like your not as perfect as you thought. Guess you can't judge me any more", Marceline thinks Princess Bubblegum looks down on her. This could either be about Marceline's general attitude being a mischevious prankster or something else maybe imagined standards Marceline didn't feel she could live up to.
This was probably part of their fall out. Princess Bubblegum replied to the previous comment with, "I never said you had to be perfect. Marceline gave Princess Bubblegum a shirt. Gift giving is usually only done between friends, partners, or visiting dignitaries.
The fact the Princess Bubblegum still kept the shirt after so long however long it has been means that while she gets frustrated with Marceline and doesn't agree with her, she still cares for her somewhat and probably holds those old memories fondly.
Marceline started crying after her argument with Princess Bubblegum in "What Was Missing" and blushed when she realized the Princess Bubblegum had kept the shirt. This means that Marceline still cares somewhat about Princess Bubblegum and that the shirt meant something to her. However, it should be noted that we have seen that Marceline can be a tad emotional and how she reacts when affection is shown to her. In "It Came from the Nightosphere", Marceline became extremely upset by the mere appearance of her father, and when he apologized to he, she was almost speechless.
In "Go With Me", Marceline would rather scare Finn away that actually talk about her feelings toward her. In "Marceline's Closet", she became a little more than flustered when trying to clean up her broken lamp. Later, Simon is seen making popcorn in her house for Marceline and Princess Bubblegum, suggesting their original friendship was restored along with the return of Simon's sanity.
Finn Though they were initially enemies, Finn and Marceline soon befriend one another. Even when Marceline acts as a bully in her debut episode, " Evicted! Both Marceline and Finn share the same spark for adventure and love of danger and excitement. Marceline is very good friends with Finn, who she seems to trust and is very comfortable being around.
One of the reasons Finn and Marceline befriend each other is that Finn saved Marceline's life in " Henchman " when Jake exposed her to the sunlight and threw garlic at her in a misguided attempt to help Finn. Although they were friends, Marceline still seemed to care about her Ax bass more than him, as seen in "It Came from the Nightosphere. They go to the movies together, but only as friends. More recently, Marceline has expressed that she does indeed care for Finn's well being.
This is exemplified in " Heat Signature ", where she becomes more protective of Finn when her ghost friends take pranking him and Jake too far on what started as a harmless "vampire initiation.
In the same episode, Finn sees Marceline naked as she is about to take a shower, resulting in Finn being very flustered. Also, in the episode, Marceline forgives them for sneaking into her house even though she says not to. After hearing this, she jests to Finn that she doesn't want to hang out with him anymore.
In " Bad Little Boy ", Marceline tells a story centered on the interaction between her male-counterpart, Marshall Leeand Finn's female-counterpart, Fionna. It is possible that she based the story on her own interaction with Finn. Even though Marceline claimed she only likes Finn as a friend, Marshall Lee seemed to think Fionna liked him more than that.
It is also possible that Marceline wrote it as a love story only to please the other princesses, but the former statement could hint at Marceline's feelings for Finn. She shows that they still have the same friendship they did in previous seasons, backing up that she was only jesting about not wanting to hang out anymore.

Jake Marceline scaring Jake in her wolf form As an avid trickster, Marceline cannot resist scaring Jake whenever they meet. As he has a completely rational fear of vampires, Marceline often teases Jake and intentionally horrifies him when the chance is given. This perpetual bullying comes back to haunt Marceline, however, when Jake refuses to believe in her generally wholesome ways and nearly fatally wounds her in "Henchman.
Later in the season however, Jake gets over his fear, and he is often seen hanging out with Finn and Marceline as friends. He later considers himself a friend though, as evidenced in " Memory of a Memory ".
In the beginning of the episode, Rag Wizard informs Finn and Jake that Marceline is the one in trouble, and Jake begins to run faster. Later, when they run into the young Marceline and she asks who they are, Finn says "We're Finn and Jake!
In Season 5, they still seem to be friends. She repeatedly mentioned, or tried, drinking Jake's blood, and later Jake tried to eat Marceline before she could eat him. At the end of the episode though, they appeared to be on good terms as they were before and have been since.

Princess Bubblegum Girlfriend Marceline and Princess Bubblegum arguing in "What was Missing" According to the original series pitch document, Marceline and Princess Bubblegum were intended to have a "friendly rivalry. The two are shown to be able to clash easily, as seen in " What Was Missing ", when Marceline sings " I'm Just Your Problem " to Princess Bubblegum, and spits on her jacket in the midst of a heated argument.
In the same episode, it is revealed that Princess Bubblegum's stolen item is a t-shirt that Marceline gave to her some time ago. Bubblegum says that the shirt means a lot to her and she reveals that she sleeps in it. Princess Bubblegum and Marceline's friendship is further explored in the comic Adventure Time: Marceline and the Scream Queensin which Bubblegum becomes the manager of Marceline's band.
However, the events expressed here may or may be not canon. It is also shown that she has a picture of them in her closet, further indicating that she harbors sentimental feelings for Marceline.
Later in the episode, Marceline flies into Princess Bubblegum's castle to ask her to help her find the eponymous sky witch, Maja. The Princess agrees to go with Marceline, who then flies her quickly out of the window and the Candy Kingdom.
