I thought for a moment that a pair of them would be the comic relief, and there seemed to be an attempt at that, but then it was as if the author had simply forgotten to pursue the idea. It is all a matter of subjective interpretation, but Drood appeals to a more high-brow reading audience, while The Alienist is more of an ‘omnivore’, mainstream book.
